Projekt czołgu na konkurs MMO World of Tanks "Zaprojektuj własny pojazd Porsche.

Dwie względnie nieuszkodzone maszyny zostały odzyskane z bagna i przesłane z powrotem do Niemiec.

Narodziny Ligera

Dokładnie przebadany w Kummersdorfie, nowy radziecki czołg zachwycił Fuhrera i jego dowódców. Heinz Guderian nazwał go "Najbardziej niepokojącą rzeczą od czasów czołgu Woroszyłowa". Pod koniec kwietnia 1945 roku MAN, Henschel i Porsche otrzymali zlecenie zaprojektowania "odpowiedzi" na to nowe zagrożenie. MAN i Henschel postanowiły udoskonalić już istniejące projekty; Panther II i E-50. Porsche natomiast wybrał inne podejście.

W zaskakująco krótkim czasie dwóch tygodni, jego biuro projektowe stworzyło hybrydę, łączącą w sobie odporny kadłub VK 4502 z całkowicie nową wieżą, kopiującą kopulaste rozwiązanie z JS-3.

Największym problemem było uzbrojenie; początkowe plany zamontowania armaty 10,5 cm KWK45 L/52 rozbiły się o jej zbyt wielkie rozmiary, przekraczające pojemność niewielkiej "kopuły" (zwanej też Kuppelturm). Ostatecznie wybór padł na sprawdzoną armatę 8,8 cm KWK43 L/71. Napęd zapewniać miał podwójny silnik, dający czołgu zadziwiającą moc 1060 koni mechanicznych.

Hitlerowi i Guderianowi zaimponowała drewniana makieta, przedstawiona podczas inspekcji zakładów. Przydzielono dodatkowe fundusze i w sierpniu 1945 pierwszy prototyp wyjechał na próby poligonowe. Wykryto szereg "chorób wieku dziecięcego", których poprawienie zajęło kilka tygodni. Drugi prototyp, o wzmocnionym podwoziu i działających w podczerwieni nocnych systemach obserwacyjnych, przeszedł udanie wszystkie testy. Nowy czołg - oficjalnie nazwany SdKfz 209 Panzerkampfwagen VII Liger* - został przyjęty na uzbrojenie Panzerwaffe. Pierwsze egzemplarze seryjne opuściły fabryki w październiku 1945 roku i wzięły udział w końcówce bitwy o Psków (21 IX - 19 X 1945).

A tank design for the World of Tanks MMO contest "Design your Porsche vehicle". Perhaps the best proof I should never be allowed to take pencil and draw ;P

Historical background

The Kursk Battle (fought between 14 VI and 2 VII 1943) is well know as the first battle where Panzer VI Tiger heavy tanks have been used in larger numbers. They have proven to be a formidable opponent to the aged KV-1 and T-34/76 tanks. Hundreds of such machines have been destroyed by the triumphant Panzers, lacking the firepower to retaliate accordingly.

The resulting stabilisation on the Eastern Front, plus a successful defense of Italy in September and October gave the German industry additional year of relative peace. First used in repelling Allied landings in Salerno (11 - 15 IX 1943) and Vibo Valentia (29 IX - 3 X), Panther tanks have proven to be excellent medium tanks, albeit suffering from numerous technical failrues. Beaten and weakened, the Western Allies did not attempt any further landings on the continent, limiting their activity to air strikes against German industry.

The Eastern Front, however, saw combat renewed as soon as September 1943. In an attempt to retake Kursk, the Soviets first used their new weapons - T-34/85, KV-85 and IS-1. The indecisive fighting lasted until autumn rainfall, resulting in further loses to the already weakened Soviet armoured forces. Tigers, Panthers and Elefants have proven their superiority - but it became evident they were no longer as powerful as they used to be in summer.

Year 1944 saw the intensive competition in armoured forces, both on the frontlines and within Germany. Henschel's Tiger II won over Porsche's VK 4502 project and then clashed with IS-2 on the frontline. Even though the Red Army managed to win a couple of victories, as well as retaking Kursk and almost reaching the Dneper during operation Podsolnyechnik (Sunflower, VII-VIII 1944), their advance was stopped once Tiger II entered the battle in numbers. In October the Soviets suffered the greatest loss in the war so far; devastated Leningrad surrendered to the Germans after over 1000 days of siege.

In early spring 1945, desperate Soviets threw their latest weapon to the frontlines; a new version of IS heavy tank, featuring a distinctive dome-shaped turret and pike nose. First encountered near Schlisselburg (East of Leningrad), they have proven to be a tough nut to crack; in a decisive push, 8 IS-3s have managed to destroy 13 Panthers and 8 King Tigers, before a combined Luft- and Panzerwaffe counterstrike pinned down and obliterated them in swampy terrain. Two relatively undamaged machines have been captured and transported back to Germany.

Birth of the Liger

Carefully examined in Kummersdorf, the new Soviet tank impressed the Fuhrer and his commanders. Heinz Guderian praised the design, naming it "the most disturbing armoured thing since the Voroshilov tank". In late April 1945 MAN, Henschel and Porsche were given order to design a "suitable response" to this new threat. MAN and Henschel simply started updating their already existant designs; Panther II and E-50. Porsche however took a different approach.

In an astonishingly short period of two weeks, his design bureau came up with a hybrid design that retained VK 4502's sturdy hull with a completely new turret, mimicking the dome solution used in IS-3.

The biggest problem Porsche encoutered was the armament; initial plans included mounting a 10,5 cm KWK 45 L/52 gun, which however has proven to be simply to big to be successfully fitted into the small "dome" turret (also known as Kuppelturm). Ultimately, it was decided that the proven 8,8 cm KWK43 L/71 gun will be used. Twin heavy engines were planned to be installed on the new tank, giving it an astonishing amount of 1060 HP.

Hitler and Guderian were impressed by a wooden mockup model presented upon inspection. Additional funds have been provided and in late August 1945 the first prototype rolled out for field trials. Several flaws in the design have been noticed and corrected. The second prototype, with improved suspension durability and infrared optical sights installed has passed all the trials successfully. The new Panzer - officially designed as SdKfz 209 Panzerkampfwagen VII Liger* - was accepted into use in the Panzerwaffe. First serial tanks left the factories in late October 1945 for the Eastern Front, where they participated in battle of Pskov (21 IX - 19 X 1945).
